The associated photographs show the business end of a Royal Products' 5C Collet Holder removed from a Clausing 5914 Lathe, taken on 19 January 2008. The larger item is the "Nose", and serves to protect the spindle et al from chips and dings, and to prevent the threaded L00 collar from jingling as the lathe runs. The Nose is made of aluminum, and is 1.875" high and 3.50" in diameter (excluding the threaded part). The threads are 6 tpi. Note the broken threads. It is surmised that the threads were broken while the nose was being used to force the holder out of the spindle taper. If one is intending to make a nose that will be used to remove the holder from the spindle, it may be better to make the nose of steel, and to make it a bit longer, so more of the threads are engaged during the forcing operation. The smaller item is the collet holder itself, and is made of hardened steel. It fits into the female taper of the 5914's spindle, and accepts a 5C collet. The spindle taper appears to be Morse 4.5. The disk is 2.5" in diameter, and is 0.555" thick. This file was last updated on 20 January 2008 by Joe Gwinn.
