TrayTop-Headstock These four pictures show the inside of the headstock on the Cincinnati TrayTop Lathe that I am in the process of cleaning up and fixing up. TrayTop-Headstock1.jpg - an overview of the gears, lubrication system, clutch. TrayTop-Headstock2.jpg - a closeup of the clutch mechanism. The brass lever slides the collar to the left to engage the clutch. At the moment, the clutch does not fully engage (it turns the shaft, but doesn't stay engaged unless the lever is continually pressed). TrayTop-Headstock3.jpg - another closeup of the clutch mechanism. TrayTop-Headstock4.jpg - a closeup of the lubrication system. Most of the lubrication appears to splash -- the gears dip into the oil bath. It appears that the large gear in the center of the picture is supposed to throw a large amount of oil onto the clutch, which then directs it into the right-hand copper tube. If oil flows up the right-hand tube, then it should flow down the left-hand tube to lubricate the bearing on which the clutch mechanism and pulleys ride (the left-hand tube disappears into the end wall). Oil should also flow down the pan to the right, and be directed into the right-hand spindle bearing.
