FILENAMES: All_Saints.jpg DESCRIPTION: Picture of sign letters made by Steve Smith . Steve provided the following description: ======================================================================== Sign made for All Saints Episcopal Church, Loveland, Colorado by Steve Smith (tamlene@juno.com) The letters are formed from 3/4 round, squished into a sideways "B" die on a hydraulic press (i.e. forming a double hump). I bent the letters by hand in some simple forms I made by bending 1/4x1 to the shape I wanted and welding it to a piece of plate to be held in a vise. Four forms were needed--a sharp curve for P, R, etc, a gentle curve for A, a circle for O and C, and a form for S. Joints between the basic shapes were done with a mig welder. Stainless steel nuts were welded on the back of the letters to allow using stainless studs into the brick wall for mounting. The mortar surrounding three bricks is 8" apart, which is the spacing I used. Mortar is lots easier to drill than brick. The finish is Permalac lacquer from Peacock Labs, doped 1% by volume with Irgacore 153. I sure hope this stuff works as well as it is supposed to! Mounting: it turns out that you actually want to bend the studs so that they bind nicely in the holes (bring a pair of tongs). Then you squirt some construction adhesive in the hole, force the studs in, and you are done. If the letter tips out of parallel with the wall (for a letter with only two studs), jam some wood chips from the landscaping under the bottom edge until the glue dries.
