FILENAMES: MeryEE.jpg DESCRIPTION: This is a picture of a MeryEE model engine kit. Posted by Martin H. Eastburn . Martin provided the following description: ========================================================================== Morrison & Martin Engine Works 1895 Mery Explosive Engine Major components in Kit form. 1/4 scale of a working engine. I can be reached via email : oldtree@pacbell.net The following are my first impressions of the kit I received this week.(June 98). The Jpeg image shows the kit sans two major items - The Flywheel and Gear(s). Those are being delivered in finished condition. I simply decided not to expence out the gear cutting and 'head' to define angles. The kit is forged from cast iron with several exceptions in brass. A 1/2" 3 ring binder comes (full) with many A size drawings defining specific parts, and their sub-assemblies. The heavy base has the serial number of the engine stamped on the end, and is about 15" long. The PTO - belt wheel is 2" wide about 5" in diameter. The flywheel (not seen) is 10.5 by 0.906 (at the hub). Looks like a good deal of mill work on this project. The parts when in pairs are mounted (cast) in pairs for one time milling. The parts are made out of heavy iron and looks to be of high quality casting. The parts - black - have been cleaned, normalized and painted. ---------------------- Address : Morrison & Martin Engine Works Box 555 Benton City, WA 99320 U.S.A. This engine with with "Novel details of construction, arrangement and combination"* was patented in 1895 by Michael L. Mery of Chico, California and produced in his foundry. No effort has been spared to make this replica as authentic as possible. Precise measurements of the only engine known to still exist and careful study of the patent papers insure this engine will be accurate in every detail. MERY ENGINE NOVEL FEATURES: -Bore 1.5" -Stroke 3.25" -Flywheel 10.5" -Lenght OA 22" -Weight 42# - 6-cycle: The timing gear ratio is 3:1 - Double Acting Cylinder: This engine fires in both ends of the cylinder. - Explosion Chambers: Also called firing chambers in the patent papers. - Sparking Apparatus: A vertical reciprocating electrode inside the explosion chamber. - Eccentric Sleeve: A hand operated eccentric inside a rocking lever to adjust ignition timing. - Cylinder purge valve: "An inwardly opening valve controlling a port which communicates with the exterior air"* - Exhaust Valve Governor: Pendulum operated governing pawls. Pendulum oscillation does not scale down. - Intake Valve Governor: Bell crank levers with notches to limit valve movement controlled "by the operation of a suitable governor, unnecessary herein to show."* - Eccentrics: No cams. eccentrics operate the valves and sparking apparatus.
