FILENAMES: lathstd1.jpg lathstd2.jpg DESCRIPTION: These are pictures of a fabricated metal lathe stand. Posted by Grant Erwin . Grant provided the following description: ================================================================= I fabricated a lathe stand as a steel weldment. I thought I'd try getting the stand galvanized. It would look metallic, and it would never rust. The graphic "lathstd1.jpg" shows the stand on my truck about ready to go to the galvanizing shop. The graphic "lathstd2.jpg" shows the stand on my truck just after it came back. I merged 2 views in, hope you can see some detail. In general hot-dip galvanizing has some caveats. The first is, you probably haven't cleaned your weld beads enough. I worked and worked on mine and still lots of black gunk after galvanizing. I would now recommend sandblasting anywhere you cannot clean the weld with a power wirebrush. The second is, you should design the unit so that there aren't any little interior pockets where fluids cannot run out. Ask your galvanizing shop if you can't imagine what I mean. I found it easy to run a drill through the pre-drilled holes, and to run a tap through the pre-tapped holes. Hey, at least I don't have to paint the sucker now. Grant Erwin grant@cdac.com P.S. That's my new knuckle boom truck in the background. That's how I get a 450# lathe stand down my exterior stairwell now!
