FILENAMES: '04-'06LS.jpg DESCRIPTION: This is a picture of a Lodge and Shipley lathe being rebuilt by Brad Mattson . Brad posed the following questions in the RCM newsgroup: ================================================================= I need some help on how to put this 1904/1906 Lodge & Shippley back together. The picture is in the drop box under '04-'06LS.jpg The only concern now is the spindle and how its oiled. What are these two 45 degree slots with threaded holes above them for???? The front bearing has what looks like oil seal recesses on both ends, but not for the back one. The bearing caps have deep central channels, I'm thinking they are to be filled with oil, but the back one has no "seal" and will throw oil all over. Unless the thrust bearing will hold that? I'm tempted to get crank oil seals (if they come in that size) or use that oily hemp stuff for the front. I was also goning to get those smash bearing strips to see how close the bearings fit, what should be the clearance? It looks like someone spray welded the spindle and reground it BTW. Another thing is, should there be gaskets between the caps? Thin ones I bet if so.
