FILENAMES: BELTGRI1.JPG DESCRIPTION: This is a set of photos of a homemade belt grinder. Posted by Greg Sefton, using this account . Greg provided the following description: ================================================================= Here it is. Any ? I'll try to answer. Apologize for the dirt & spider webs. Made my living with this machine for awhile after college making knives. 1 HP 3450 rpm flange mt pump motor. You can find em for about nothing after the pump heads go out. This is the same one I started with. Makes about 6000 SFM and will grind a RR rail in two if you want to. The small red handle on the idler wheel pushes against the arm which pivots in and out to true the belt. The idler wheel and drive wheel are both crowned. Not the contact wheel though. The slot in the plate is where the idler arm went through originally as it was made for 2X48 belts and 6" contact wheel I made from a rubber caster wheel and bored for bearings. Later got a 8" (Chicago rubber Co.) serrated wheel and went to 2x60 belts. The shaft for the contact wheel is slotted so it can be adjusted in and out. Just bore a 3/4 inch hole for the contact wheel shaft and cut a slot into it from a ways back then drill and tap across it for a cap screw to lock the shaft in place or remove it to change to a platen rest or set up like the square wheel.
