FILENAMES: center01.jpg center02.jpg center03.jpg DESCRIPTION: These are pictures of centering a workpiece on a lathe faceplate. Posted by Bucky Goldstein . Bucky provided the following description: ================================================================= Someone was just asking how to center a workpiece on a punch mark for accurate boring. These shots illustrate a good way to do it. Descriptions follow. center01.jpg: The workpiece is in the chuck. The center gage is held against the punch mark by pressure from the tailstock. The gage is tapered at the workpiece end with the same taper as my center punch. The tailstock end is tapered to receive the tailstock center. The gage is spring loaded to allow for some longitudinal compression from the tailstock. The headstock end is hardened. center02.jpg: A dial indicator is mounted such that its pointer comes down on the vertical axis of the center gage. If the punch mark isn't centered, its eccentricity will show up on the dial. The workpiece is adjusted accordingly until the dial shows no motion. center03.jpg: This is a close-up of the rig's business end. Note that in place of the gage you could use a spare dead center. Put the point on your punch mark and hold the tail end in place with your tailstock center. Then use a dial indicator as above.
