The Elliott Omnimils represent the finest value in complete toolroom Millers marketed today, comprising the Elliott Models Ul and U2 horizontal Milling Machines fitted with an Independently powered multi-purpose vertical head giving a combination of eight machines in one-jig boring, vertical milling, drilling, horizontal milling, die-sinking, rack milling, slotting and shaping. The keen value of these machines is possible only because all the major parts are common to the well known models Ul and U2 which are already manufactured in economic batches. The structure of each machine consists essentially of a sturdy column casting, an equally rugged box section knee, a well supported saddle and table sub-assembly, and a heavy base casting which incorporates the coolant reservoir. THE DRIVE is transmitted from a motor housed in the lower part of the column through double vee ropes and two stepped pulleys with a quick change arrangement, in the column gearbox . This provides 12 speeds from 31 to 1010 rpm in two ranges of 6 and for each range the gearbox. gives a choice of 9 teed rates-18 feeds in all. The change speed gears which constitute the main drive are all made of nickel chrome steel, tooth rounded and hardened. The faster running members are tooth ground and the shafts on which the sliding goara are carried are spline ground. An inching button facilitates gear changes and the larger of the final drive gears, is no less than 9.800" (249 mm) diameter. All the column shafts run on ball or roller bearings and the whole unit is pump lubricated from the gearbox oil bath. THE No.40 HORIZONTAL SPINDLE is a substantial hardened and ground component made from a nickel-chrome molybdenum forging and is carried on precision type taper roller bearings. The Arbors are produced from forgings of a similar material, they are supported by two steadies, the bushing of the outer one being adjustable, and both of these bearings are lubricated by push buttons. THE SADDLE has a built-in one-shot lubricator which oils both the table and knee shears, the table screw and the table drive gearing, in a single movement. The table itself has a precision ground working area, tee slots are machined from the solid, and the carbon steel leadscrew operates in two adjustable bronze nuts. A large graduated dial is fitted at the right-hand end whilst the opposite end is designed to drive a standard universal dividing head. Similar adjustable dials are applied to the cross and vertical movements. THE KNEE is a rugged casting which supports the saddle assembly on the ground dovetails and which is accurately scraped to fit the ground vertical shears on the front of the column. Adjustable gib strips are provided on all slides. THE OVERARM with its precision ground vee slides for accurate location on the hand-scraped top of the column, is cored from one end only, so that it has an unbroken tubular section with which to resist the cutting forces. An overarm brace clamping overarm to the knee is Included as standard equipment. THE BASE which is bolted and dowelled to the column to form a combined unit of great strength and rigidity, is itself ribbed so as to increase its own strength and at the same time to provide suitable weirs for the separation of loose particles In the coolant. A self-contained electric coolant pump is externally mounted on the base where It Is accessible for cleaning and maintenance. LUBRICATION includes the application of grease to a number of nipples, but these have been reduced to a minimum by virtue of the one-shot lubricator on the saddle assembly and the oil circulating system associated with the column gearing. MODEL Ol has a universal saddle which swivels to 45 in either direction, and has power feeds to the table. It is fitted with a 3 hp motor. Since the feed rates are selected from gearing carried In the column main gearbox and thence transmitted directly to the saddle the knee is mainly a structural member and the machine has acquired a reputation for accuracy, ease of operation, and very simple maintenance. MODEL 02 is a heavier machine with longer table and a 4 hp drive. It has a universal saddle and power feeds in all three directions. The table feed is engaged, and tripped at the front of the saddle whilst directional control levers at the side of the knee operate the vertical and transverse movements. All feed engagements are made by case-hardened dog clutches and adjustable trip stops are provided for all three directions. Ol and 02 MULTI PURPOSE HEAD Powered by 1.5 hp motor the drive is transmitted through four step vee pulleys which, In conjunction with back gearing provide 8 spindle speeds, 80 to 2700 rpm in either direction. The spindle drive pulley is mounted on an independent shaft, thus freeing the spindle from any stresses caused by belt pull. Three rates of power feeds are provided 0015", 003" and 006" (0~04 mm, 0~075 mm and 0~15 mm) with automatic trip operating in both directions in addition to fine and coarse hand feeds. The taper in the hardened and ground spindle, mounted on precision double row angular contact ball bearings is No.30 International Steep Taper. To provide simple and accurate table settings, for all models, precision optical measuring equipment or slip rod troughs with dial gauges and housings can be supplied as extra equipment.
