FILENAMES: wedge.jpg DESCRIPTION: This is a drawing and text about a log splitting wedge device. Posted by Errol Groff . Errol provided the following description: ================================================================= A couple of years ago a cohort found a powder wedge out in the woods around his place. It had been made from an old wagon axle and spindle. Whats an old Powder wedge? Pay attention and you too can have fun and get work done. A pwder wedge was a tool that would split butt logs for firewood. About two feet long of solid 1.5 inch to 2inch round bar with about a 8 inch taper on one end with a half inch bore going up the taper end about as deep with a touch hole for the fuze at the end of the bore. If you are a blackpowder shooter you would know how to load a blank shot. After its loaded tap it into the center of the log butt lay on side, light fuze and get away. Big BOOM, and the wedge is blown back about 3 feet and the log is split. Sears used to sell them about 35 years ago. Urban areas sort of frown on this sort of fun, but then I dont live in a urban area. I made these for gifts to some of my cronies. ahhh burnt powder aroma and a cozy fire. A log splitter is more efficient but not more fun. Rufo
