Posted by Mike M Fendley . The following description was provided: ================================================================= 3/4" to 9" cap. ball bearing steady rest for 12" lathe I built this ball bearing steady rest many years ago from a set of plans from Live Steam (I think). I added a few features like the hand cranks to position the arms and the hand locks to lock them. I wanted a steady that could be adjusted by hand - no tools involved. Recently I adapted the base to fit my new (to me) Jet 12x40 lathe. The steady used to sit on a 12" Atlas. I designed the steady so that it could go from lathe to lathe with just a mount modification, not the whole steady. PROBLEM: I've got a number of guys who want the plans to this with my additional modifications. Does anyone have the original plans out there? If so, I'd gladly pay for a copy. Please email me for my mailing address. Pictures of the steady rest in use can be seen at the link below. Look for BBS-xxxx.jpg and txt. There are some exploded views and different angled shots of the steady (from its Atlas days) in the metalworking drop box archives of 2000. Look for AtlasAsy.jpg / SteadyR#.jpg and txt for explanations. Email: mikejanf@juno.com Using the steady. BBS-TrueTube.jpg - The heavy wall 4.5" tube is internally held by a 3 jaw chuck at one end and supported by a pipe center on the other to take a truing cut for the ball bearing steady rest. BBS-SteadyTiltPix.jpg - From the tail stock end you can see that the steady is slightly tilted for the Jet lathe. On the Atlas 12" it was straight up and down. The tilt was needed for carriage clearance. One of the inset pix shows the arms in their 9" capacity setting. BBS-CarriageClearance - Back side shot of clearance and hand locks for each arm. Hand locks are 40 tpi . . . plenty of locking power. BBS-UpClose.jpg - Shows the tool bit ready for a facing cut on the tube. BBS-Ready2Bore.jpg - Shows a boring bar holder ready to start boring the tube.
