FILENAMES: JMKCOL1.jpg JMKCOL1.jpg DESCRIPTION: These are pictures of a home-made lathe collet chuck. Posted by John Kasunich . The following description was provided: ================================================================= The Morse 4 lathe spindle taper on my Shoptask lathe is too small for 5C collets, and MT 4 collets are rare and expensive. I managed to buy a set of quality Swiss made screw machine collets, in 1/64 increments from 1/16 to 15/32 inches on eBay for only $99. Photo JMKCOL1.JPG shows the collets in the storage box I made for them, and the collet chuck that I made to adapt them to the MT4 spindle taper. JMKCOL2.JPG is a closeup view of the disassembled chuck. The main body is made from a cheap Phase II drill chuck arbor. Using the arbor gave me a ready made MT4 taper, I simply had to drill, bore, and grind the inside collet taper, and thread for the cap. The cap is made of OMS (old motor shaft - I picked up a couple from the scrap pile at work). It was my first experience with inside threading. The spanner wrench tightens the cap to close the collets. It is made from mild steel plate, with a hardened and tempered drill rod pin. John Kasunich
