These are pictures of sand mullers for metal casting.

Mark provided the following description:

The mullers shown are of three types...  no wheels, 
one wheel, and two wheels.  All are commercial units 
and work well.   

The no wheel unit is probably the best for home 
construction.  If you look at the arms, you will 
see that the sand is pushed outward by the shape 
of the spiral arms.  At the end of the arms is a 
small scraper-scoop that forces the sand to move 
upward.  As the sand rises, it hits the rim of the 
muller bowl and falls back in towards the center 
because of the lip on the rim.  Because the mixing 
action of the spiral arms, the sand is conditioned 
quite well.
