Posted by Peter Keillor . The following description was provided: ================================================================= These photos are of my first completed project on my lathe, a Delta-Rockwell 11"X24". I sawed a couple of pieces of 3/4" aluminum plate for the handwheel and external bearing housing, and joined them with pilot and recess and 4 10-24 socket head cap screws. The handwheel is internally threaded to mate with the closer tube, which is 1-3/8"X 0.090" 4340 tube from ASAP. The inside bearing mount, which slips over the tube before screwing on the handwheel assembly, is 1117 steel, and is a sliding fit inside the spindle. The thrust bearing is a Fafnir B543, which is a very tiny double row ball bearing intended for aircraft torque tube use, ie. big loads, but only oscillating motion. It has a 4400 lb. thrust rating, and is only 2"od. x 1.75"id. X 0.28" wide. It seems to work well. The taper adapter is the first thing I made, and ain't perfect, but works o.k. The L00 protector is of 2040 aluminum, and works very well to protect the spindle nose and remove the taper adapter. Runout is less than .001", which is as good as I can measure.
