FILENAMES: facemill1.jpg facemill2.jpg DESCRIPTION: These are pictures of facemills which use lathe toolbits. Posted by Mike Graham . The following description was provided: ================================================================= Mike Graham Nov 27, 2001 Recently there was a thread on rec.crafts.metalworking pertaining to the existance of face mills which used regular toolbits instead of inserts. I have such an object, and I was asked to post pictures to the drop box. There are three files: facemill.txt - this file facemill1.jpg - a machine's-eye view of the cutter head facemill2.jpg - a side view of the cutter head This item is properly called a face mill because the cutter head is seperate, and has multiple cutting edges. Normally I have it mounted on an R8 shank, but I removed the shank to do the scans. The cutter head has a 3" diameter and takes 4 standard toolbits of a 1/2" square cross section. In the scans you see brazed carbide toolbits, but any 1/2" toolbits would work. The cutter head has stubby toolbits mounted in it, but regular-length ones will fit - the stubbies make it easier to lay in the coolant, and there's no benefit to the extra toolbit length. Inserting the toolbits can be quite a fiddly operation if you want perfection, but I just lower the cutter head close to a flat surface and let the toolbits hang loose so that they all touch, then I tighten the clamping bolts finger tight to hang onto the toolbits, raise the cutter head and snug the bolts with an allen key. I get results good enough for my purposes.
