Posted by Eric R Snow . The following description was provided: ================================================================= These pictures describe modifications to a 5C mounted 4 inch chuck. The chuck was modified to be adjustable so parts could be made to run true. Three set screws were used to provide adjustment instead of four because that was what there was room for. The plate in the chuck which retains the scroll is shaped like a top hat. This plate has had three slots milled in it to provide clearance for the adjusting screws. The screws used were 5/16-24. The mounting plate, which has the 5C shank on it, has a shoulder which was used to provide centering for the chuck. This was turned down .040 smaller so the chuck has about .040 adjustment. The mounting plate was drilled and tapped three places 3/8-24 and grade 8 screws were threaded in to the end of the threads and loctite was used to prevent them from loosening. After the loctite set the screw heads were sawn off. The outside of the screw shanks were turned to the same diameter as the locating shoulder when the shoulder was turned. The plate was also faced at this time. Chuck1.jpg shows the inside of the chuck with the retainer plate installed. Chuck2.jpg shows the set screw location. Chuck3.jpg shows the retainer plate out of the chuck. Chuck4.jpg shows the mounting plate surface. Chuck5.jpg shows the mounting plate on it's side and the sawn off screws protruding.
