The following description was provided: ================================================================= Photos of a rebuild of a Sheldon 11X56 lathe Sheldonized1 is a before and after photo of the tailstock rebuild. A previous owner had broken the tailstock casting, tailstock screw shaft and handwheel. He had welded a steam valve nut and stem into the tailstock and used a steam valve handwheel in place of the tailstock handwheel. The nut was slightly cocked abd caused stiff tailstock operation. Sheldonized 2 shows steps in repair of the tailstock casting. The broken end was faced and counterbored on a vertical mill using a rotary table to align the bore with the cutter. A sleeve with matching pilot was clamped into the counterbore and nickel silver brazed. The surface was filled and painted. Sheldonized 3 shows the plate which came from the previous owner, a 1/4" piece of cold roll with a flame cut hole. There was no antirotation feature for the tailstock hold down bolt. The left side of the photo shows the cast iron replacement machined from a cast iron cam blank. Sheldonized4 shows the broken quick change tumbler lever and the braze repair.
