The following description was provided: ================================================================= From: "volzmechatronic" Date: Fri Jul 5, 2002 7:47 pm Subject: Whip (Monarch?) 16-inch Shaper Greg Hoffman ( greg638@n... ) has sent me 3 PICs of a Whipp Machine Tool Company, Sidney, OH, 16-inch shaper for which he is seeking any, and all, information. To date, I have been able to discover the following incomplete information, which is sketchy at best. A Mr. I.H. Thedieck, a prominent businessman and industrialist in Sidney, OH, during the late 1800's and early 1900's, is known to have had an interest in the Whipp Machine Tool Company. He is also the founder of Monarch Lathes and, in the Spring of 1912, appointed his son-in-law, a Mr. Wendell Whipp, as General Manager, a position he held until his retirement in April 1947. It is not known what linkage the Whipp Machine Tool Company had with Monarch Lathes if any. The source indicated that Mr. Wendell Whipp did not have any knowledge about machine tools prior to his appointment. It is possible that the Whipp Machine Tool Company may have been a "trial subsidiary" of Monarch to "test the waters" for marketability of shapers. It also is possible that Whipp Machine Tool Company may have been absorbed into Monarch at some time. Both Monarch Lathes and the Shelby County Historical Society have been asked to provide whatever information that they might have concerning the Whipp Machine Tool Company, its manufactured products, and, especially, its shapers. Any information, from anyone, would be appreciated. Any other one of you shaper nuts out there, in the ether, have one of these beasties?
