FILENAMES: shim_punch.jpg DESCRIPTION: These are pictures of a home made shim punch. Posted by James Glass . The following description was provided: ================================================================= Here are a couple of shim punch dies I have made. These are worth their weight in gold when it comes to making clean punched holes in steel or aluminum sheet, cardboard or paper. The smaller one is simply a block of tool steel with holes drilled and reamed through then the block is slotted with a saw or plain milling cutter. Heat treat this and it will last forever. I made the small one 25 years ago. Better make several of these because others will want one to. Use dowel pin for punches. Grind a little stinger on the end so center punch marks can be aligned for precision punching. The dowel pins are already hardened. The other die was made just to punch rectangular holes. The other holes were added just in case. The upper part is cold rolled and the lower (die) is hardened A-2. It also has a deep throat for punching several inches away from the edge.
