The following description was provided: ================================================================= Steptoe-Western 14 Shaper Here are some photos of a Steptoe-Western shaper I got ahold of recently. Steptoe_14_move_1.jpg The shaper has been loaded on this rented trailer and strapped and rigged like other machine moves I do. I use 3/8" chains and ratcheting load-binders on the back end, with a thick discarded bathmat to protect the surface of the vise and table from chain scuffs. The front end of the shaper is tied down with lifting straps and a 1-1/2 ton come-along. I also used a couple ratcheting web tie-downs for lateral stability. The thing is a little top heavy. Steptoe_14_move_2.jpg Matt Isserstedt meets John Steptoe! 8-) Steptoe_14_move_3.jpg I’m using my shop crane to move and position the shaper. The key characteristic is that the machine’s floor legs bypass the machine base on either side. Steptoe_14_move_4.jpg Here is how I rigged the shaper for lifting. A 2-ton rated 2 foot sling around the front end of the ram, protected by the bathmat. A 1-ton rated 4 foot sling around the rear drip tray, in a choker mode. This was the best way to get the shaper to lift level. Other combinations of different length straps caused one end to lift much higher than the others which made me nervous. Disclaimer. Don’t try this kind of rigging and moving at home. I have no idea what equipment you have or if it is safe or if you know how to use it. Machine tools are extreeemely heavy and can crush you or your property in a second. Use load-rated lifting and rigging products. Matt Isserstedt 07 Dec 2002 matt.isserstedt@gm.com
