The 5hp has a cast iron muffler that works really well. When I walked around to look at that side of the machine, I was standing briefly with my ear about 3 inches from the exhaust near the top of the muffler, and noticed only a quiet "whuff" each time the engine fired. I moved away from it because of the hot gases coming out, not because of the noise. The 3hp muffler, however, is an aluminum reproduction, and doesn't silence nearly as well. It was more noisy at 3 feet than the other one at 3 inches. Moral: Use only original Stickney replacement parts on your Stickney engines.
