FILENAMES: tig-cart_1.jpg tig-cart_2.jpg DESCRIPTION: These are pictures of a cart for a TIG welder. Posted by Bob Powell . The following description was provided: ================================================================= Bob Powell July 4, 2002 Photos tig_cart_1.jpg and tig_cart_2.jpg I made this cart tall and skinny to fit a Syncrowave 351 package in the minimum possible footprint. The cart is about 32" wide and 36" deep. The kit all came from an auction, with the cooler, 2 torches, stick cable and 20' power cord, lots of spaghetti to hang up. The rectangular base and 6" casters was a cart from Boeing Surplus cut down to the smaller footprint. The casters are worn out so someday I will cut them off and get good new ones. The loaded cart weighs about 1000 lbs so it needs a clean floor and good wheels. That is the last time I will use junk casters for something like this. The corner posts are 2" x 1/4" angle x 6'. Yes the top of the cooler is 8' in the air but it is out of the way and quieter up there. The shelf and its frame right over the welder just sits free on ledges on the corner posts. It lifts out to get to the top cover of the welder and also to remove and install the welder in the cart. That requires the assistance of an engine hoist. The top two shelves are fixed in place. I will eventually add a grid of 3' tubes to the top shelf to organize the filler rod. There are 13 hooks on the back and sides for cables, hoods & clothing, cut from 3" lengths of 2" angle with the edges ground down smooth. There are 16 cable hoops along the length of the insides of the corner posts, cut from 1/2" slices of 2" angle. The second photo shows the gas bottle retainer. Two bottles fit on either side of the back of the machine. The bottles are secured by a 1/4" x 2" strap bent in a half hexagon shape that fits one side of a bottle. A short section of 3/4" pipe is welded to the each end of the strap with a cut slot that catches the chain. The excess chain hangs down through the pipe at both ends. All things considered for the small stuff I do the 351 is way overkill. Between the fan in the cooler and the 2 in the welder you need earplugs just to turn the thing on. No I don't want to trade it... Aside from the casters, the only thing I would have done different here was to use square tube for the corner posts instead of open angle. There is no bracing anywhere because it would interfere with access to the back and sides, and the 2" angle alone is pretty shakey when rolling the cart. Bob
