The following pictures describe my adventure moving a 13" Clausing Colchester late bed through my front door, down the stairs, into my basement. I designed and built a gantry crane to handle this specific task. The ends telescope and swivel to get onto the front porch and through the front door. I apologise for having different sized pictures and some which are rather large. My computer is limping along and I am currently very limited with image management software. The breakdown is as follows. 1. Out of the garage in front of the house. Easy to move with the crane. I bolted 2x4 "skiis" on the bottom of the bed to assist in sliding down the stairs. 2. Lowerd the bed in front of stairs, then repositions crane half on porch, half on sidewalk. Notice end on sidewalk is telecoped upward to keep beam level. 3. Lowerd bed onto front porch then repositioned crane half in foyer, half on porch. 4. Going through the front door and into the foyer. 5. What everyone should have in a foyer to greet guests. I put hardboard down to protect the hardwood floors. Worked perfectly with no damage to the flooring. 6. Positioned in front of the stairs. 7. The angle the chain will make when sliding down the stairs will attempt to tip the gantry over. I stabilized the beam against the opening and padded to protect trim. 8. Sliding down the stairs. Notice the steep angle in the chain. The crane is taking the vertical load and the hallway opening is taking the horizontal load. 9. "Skiing" down the stairs. The skiis worked well. I angled the ends so they didn't hand up on the stairs. They didn't. 10. Bottom of the stairs. 11. Moved the gantry crane into the basement and moved the bed to be cleaned up and repainted.
