The tilting function (through 200 degrees) is performed by a 600:1 reversible induction motor coupled to a worm drive gearbox from an old skil saw (total reduction 3000:1). There is sufficient bac 1. A bike disk brake modified (held in the braked position with a very strong spring) and disengaged by a solenoid a few miliseconds before the tilt position motor is activated. Problem: The spring has to be very strong to stop the movement of the table, rotating head and weldment, a total of 50lbs one foot from the point of rotation. The solenoid has to be huge to counteract the spring force required so space and power supply siz 2. An electric clutch/brake from a pitney bowes letter sorting machine machine two inches in diameter. Problem: Not eneough holding torque though it looked neat and tidy I am leaning towards a band type brake for simplicity. Does any one have the basic geometry required to brake this shaft in both directions? I have room to add a 3 inch diameter drum to the keyed shaft. Any additional ideas would be appreciated. Cheers ....Gerry
