LatheMove pictures show my adventure moving a 13" Clausing Colchester lathe from Toledo Ohio to Metro Detroit. LatheMove0.jpg Machine strapped down to the little utility trailer. Trailer wasn't big but the 3,500 lb capacity was more than enough for my 2000 lb machine. If you look closely, the machine is sitting on two 4x4 that are fastened to the base. This provides added lateral stability to prevent the lathe from tipping when being handled. Brian Lawson on RCM provided this helpful tip. LatheMove1.jpg. I technically only lifted half the machine at a time. This was my first machine move so I figured half the weight will minimize the risk. I also didn't want to test the failure mode of the import shop crane. I used the ratchet straps to pull the lathe half off the trailer while the tailstock end was lifted. LatheMove2.jpg. Droped the tailstock end onto the ground. Repositioned shop crane to handle headstock end. LatheMove3.jpg Picked up the headstock end and pulled the trailer out from under. LatheMove4.jpg Temporary home. Notice the 4x4's the machine is sitting on. I cut up some steel angle and used lag screw to fasten the 4x4 to the base. The angle iron and lag screws allowed attachment from above.
