Crimp-on Fittings for Small Cable by Ted Edwards See also baby_crimp1.jpg baby_crimp2.jpg baby_crimp3.jpg I originally came up with this scheme for rigging radio controlled sailboats. The ferrule is a 1/4" long piece of 1/8" Al 5556 TIG rod. The hole is drilled with a #56 drill lubed with A9 Aluminum cutting fluid. The crimper shown in baby_crimp1.jpg came from Boeing Surplus and is intended (I think) for crimping connectors onto coax center conductors. The wire rope is 0.021" diameter and was obtained from a model shop. As you can see, there's no way you're going to pull the loop out of the crimp. For a ball end, I drill a 1/32" hole, start to cut off 1/8" of the rod, file the ends round and finish cutting off. Crimp is with crimper set to wire size 12. I have also crimped these fittings with a Sargent mini-crimper as shown in baby_crimp2.jpg with some of the fittings. This gave results at least as good as with the other tool. Note that the sizes shown on the Sargent tool refer to the wire sizes not the fitting OD. An example of the result is shown in baby_crimp3.jpg. I did this after loosing a couple of shackle pins.
