Repair of a round permanent magnetic chuck. This was a Walker/Pilana chuck made in the Czech Republic. I purchased an 8 inch dia mag chuck (customer returned) for $10. The reason for the return was that the acuating shaft had sheared off. I questioned this group as to if there were potential problems w/ dismantling a mag chuck. Several people requested pictures of the dismantled chuck so as to see what is inside. Upon close examination, the hole drilled in the actuating shaft (for broaching the internal hex drive) was excessively deep and there was only about an .030 ring of material remaining between the external ball bearing groove and the drilled hole. Solution was to dismantle and TIG weld the shaft back together and remachined the ball bearing groove. The ball bearings act as both a radial and axial (shaft keeper) bearing surface.
