Now that I am middle aged, welding small parts while kneeling on the garage floor (parts laying on either a steel plate, or fire bricks on the concrete floor) is getting old. I needed a table that I could weld on and but that welding table had to store out of the way. Since I do not have any wall space that is unused, I decided on a table that would store over an existing work bench. The intent is to move a vehicle out of the garage and push the table into the middle of the garage to do any serious welding. I am very much afraid of an undetected smoldering fire started by a welding spark (this workshop garage is located about 10 miles from my residence and any smoldering could easily go undetected until it is too late). The welding table is essentially made from found objects. The only exceptions to that is the top plate (purchased very cheaply at an auction) and some of the small angle pcs used as drawer "tracks". THe table top plate is 36 x 36. My desired table shape would have been 42w x 30d so that it would protrude less past the work bench. THe table was made with 6 legs (the two rearward ones are removeable to stow the table over the workbench. THe table is surprisingly sturdy and I do not find that I even need to use the rear legs. The table has a fixed 12 inch high steel back plate and removable 12 inch high sides as spark shields. Optionaly the table also has an additional 24 inch high welding curtain that can be used if I need to do a minimal ammount of welding w/ either the table located over the workbench or if the table is freestanding but something nearby needs to be protected from welding sparks. Pure dumb luck has it that my AC buzz box fits under the welding table (which freed up some space under another workbench for steel drops that I recently aquired).
