image file = coil, chainsaw, annotated for a post in "Chainsaw Collectors.se" forum This image is of a coil for a McCullogh MAC 15 chainsaw I took some measurements of my coil, and was wondering if anyone can interpret them for me. The way this is installed is the coil is slipped over the center leg of the three legged, laminated core. This assembly is bolted to the block. Wire A is grounded to the block through one of the mounting bolts. Wire B goes to the points and condenser. The stop switch is a piece of steel which connects the copper clip on Wire B to ground (the metal fan shroud) I gather that this will bypass the points, allowing no spark. Measuring resistance between A and B gives 0.5 ohms. I am guessing that this is the primary winding. Measuring between the plug wire and A or B (reading was the same for both) gave me 6.37 Kilo-ohms. I am still trying to find an analog meter to test the condenser. (I can say that it is an open circuit between the wire and the "can")
