Text and pics on the modification of a Champion Fuel Injection Cleaner kit. The Champion Fuel System Tune Up set was produced in the mid '90's and distributed through Napa and other retail houses. It was an excellent set, with comprehensive, well illustrated instructions. It used a pressurized 12oz can manufactured and distributed by Champion, filled with a cleaning compound and light hydrocarbons to run the engine on the can contents with the car's fuel pump disabled. A vast array of adapters and fittings made this kit adaptable to virtually any F/I vehicle. Champion went out of business, and with no supply of flush cans, the kit was rendered unusable. Along comes 3M several years later. They create their own style of F/I cleaning equipment, have the exact same can manufactured but with their own propriatary contents and thread on the nipple, thus making sure it could not be used with the Champion kit; deliberatly keeping the Champion kit obsolete. I adapted the Champion flush valve to the 3M can by using an off the shelf 1/4NPT adapter. I bored the adapter out to .500" on the large end. I then made 2 brass collars With a .001 interference OD, threading one internally for the 7/16-20 threaded can tap fitting, which was also the original can thread of the Champion can. I threaded the other collar with the proprietary 26TPI thread form of the 3M can. I bored the rear of the adapter to .415", to allow removing and adjusting the depth of the can tap fitting from the rear. I pressed the can tap collar in, then the can thread adapter collar. I soldered the can thread collar to be sure it would not rotate when screwing it into the can. I drilled/tapped the adapter 12-24 for a set screw to lock the can tap in place once the depth was determined. Didn't have a set screw handy, so used a screw for now.
