This fracture is a result of a tack weld. The plate is about 2.5 inches in thickness and about six inches wide. The strip of plate was to be rolled into a ring when it fractured almost immediately at the starting end. The cause of the fracture is a tack weld that had been put on the surface of the plate and then ground off. The weld had been ground flush however the radiating lines of fracture can be seen from that location. This shows just how dangerous random tack welds on heavyplate can be.
