I have installed a flat section of 1/4" thick steel plate
on the "far side" of the compound so that  a magnetic indicator
base can be attached.

The lathe is a South Bend 10 Heavy and the SB far side cover is curved
and has an irregular surface.
The plate also has two set screws protruding through it so tha place can
be positioned "tweeked" to be flat/plane etc.

The 1/4 plate was a hunk of scrap I had sitting around and that accounts 
for the other "extra" holes in it.
