Hardinge ESM ("splitbed" hand screw machine). Hardinge model immediately prior to DV/DSM series ("Dovetail" screw machine). Used for rapid manual production of moderately complex small parts such as might be run on a screw machine if quantities were higher. Turret and cross slide are tooled up to make a knurled nut blank for (woodworking) mortise machine collets. Photos show sequence of operations. Blank will be single point threaded in a separate operation, on a separate Hardinge with "chase threading" attachment to maintain squareness of thread feature to back of nut.
