I am wondering how this tube end is made.  the tube is stainless steel, 1 inch OD.  I am not sure of the alloy, 
but it is typical for stainless hand rails on a boat.

I tried crushing the end in a vice, but my end result looks....well it looks crushed by a vice.
any suggestions for a neater job would be appretiated.
