I did work in a job shop for a while, putting myself through school for the second degree, and did some small metalworking jobs while working as a chemist at NASA-Ames. I'm now an engineer (doing failure analysis) for Lockheed-Martin. I've begun getting into metalworking as a hobby because of having 'inherited' some tools (lathe, drill press, bandsaw...) from my father-in-law, a long time mechanical engineer. The principal use of these tools now is for me to try and imbue my younger stepson with a sense of how things can be done, and of the discipline of working around machinery. My wife, with me in the picture, is really the mechanical one of us. She faith heals machines. All she needs to do is put her hands on my motorcycle, and it promptly returns to full function.
