I design, build, and operate all kinds of scientific equipment. A lot of the experiements are for measuring magnetism of various types - our group recently built a three-axis magnetic gradiometer for the US Navy. Many of the experiments involve some kind of low-temperature physics, using either liquid nitrogen or liquid helium. Right now I'm also working a part time night job at a company that produces nylon crane sheaves and wear pads, Licharz USA. This lets me save up some, plus I'm getting to learn a bit of G-code programming on the machines. But mostly I'm just a glorified part loader - who can read a mic! I got my start with home shop machines when I was working for GTE as a technican, and a co-worker sold me a 1938 vintage Atlas lathe that needed a lot of work. At the time the local voc-tech school had a night program for metalworking, so it all kind of meshed. So basically I suppliment my engineering and electronics skills on the job with the skills in metalworking that I've picked up along the way. I've owned (and still do own) a number of different lathes and milling machines for my home shop, starting with that Atlas lathe, which fit into our kitchen hallway. Right now I've got a 10L SB lathe and a Hardinge UM milling machine, plus a couple of Hardinge lathes that are restoration projects. I use these to work on vintage motorcycles, most of which are BMWs. The Jim.jpg photo shows me at home in the shop, and the Mulligan.jpg photo is my wife, Nora Mulligan - the lady who puts up with my antics, and has provided my posting handle on RCM by virtue of me using her ISP at home. This is the same lady that some of you may have seen in the 'Bonnie Parker Mulligan' photo. The Mates.jpg photos shows me and my IBM co-workers, with the navy gradiometer system in the background (phenolic cage assembly). That's me sitting on a '69 R60US bmw bike in bmw.jpg. I've also used my home shop to maintain my neighbors jeep, shown in FordMB.jpg. I'm 41, married to an ex-lawyer, and we have a daughter named Maggie, and two cats. We live near the Hudson River in Peekskill, NY. Folks can e-mail me at either of two places, either jrr0 at watson(dot)ibm(dot)com or at mulligan at advinc(dot)com
